Anna sui Fragrances

International designer Anna Sui's involvement in fashion began at an early age, with a devotion to dressing her dolls and her neighbor's toy soldiers for her own personal version of the Academy Awards. Sui eventually extended her fashion interest to include designing her own clothes and clipping fashion magazine pages to serve as inspirations. To this very day, she continues to refer to these ""genius files"".After graduating from high school in Detroit, Michigan, Sui moved to New York City to attend Parsons School of Design. While at Parsons, Sui found a collaborator and close friend in Steven Meisel, today one of the world's top fashion photographers. Her early days as a stylist for Meisel's shoots included editorial for the Italian fashion magazine LEI.After leaving Parsons, Sui worked at a variety of junior sportswear companies.

In 1980, Sui presented six original pieces at the Boutique Show and immediately received an order from Macy's, who featured one of her designs in a New York Times advertisement. That same year, Anna Sui launched her own business that operated out of her apartment throughout the 1980's.In 1991, Anna Sui premiered her first runway show, featuring her signature ""head-to-toe"" look and prompting the New York Times to proclaim it a ""pastiche of hip and haute styles."" In that same year, Sui moved her business and showroom to its current location in the Garment District. In 1992, Sui opened her own boutique at 113 Greene Street in the SoHo district of New York. The store reflects Sui's distinct taste: pairing flea market furniture and whimsical Dolly Head mannequins in a room with purple walls and red floors. In 1993, Sui won the prestegious CFDA Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent. The first of three Anna Sui freestanding boutiques in Asia opened in May 1997 in Tokyo. The second opened in Osaka in the Fall of that same year. Another Osaka venue opened in 2000. The stores mark the continued worldwide expansion of the Anna Sui brand and lifestyle. Isetan Company Limited is the main licensee for the Japanese distribution of the women's collection and Mammina, a subsidiary of Isetan, is the distributor to department and specialty stores there.
In 1997, Anna Sui Shoes premiered on her runway for Fall 1997. Manufactured by Ballin in Venice, Italy, the shoe collection is comprised of both day and evening styles, and include velvet, silk, patent leather, snake and lizard skin, shearling and suede.Anna Sui opened her Los Angeles boutique in 1999 in Sunset Plaza, in West Hollywood. In 1999, Sui launched her signature fragrance and cosmetic line. In October 1997, Anna Sui signed a fragrance licensing deal with Wella AG of Germany to develop a signature fragrance. In a three-sided arrangement, Wella shares the Anna Sui beauty business with Japanese cosmetics maker Albion, which holds the Anna Sui color cosmetics and skin care license. Under the agreement , Wella will produce and market Anna Sui fragrances while Albion introduces the Anna Sui color collection for Japan. Wella will sell the fragrances to Albion, which will distribute them inside Japan, while Albion will sell the color cosmetics to Wella for distribution outside of Japan. For Fall 2000, Sui Dreams, the second Anna Sui fragrance launched worldwide.Called a designer that ""never panders"" by The New York Times, Anna Sui continues to design and manufacture her signature Anna Sui Collection in her New York City headquarters. GETTING YOUR FREAK ON / SPEAKING OUT

At last, a resource for the rest of us. I was tickled to discover the 10 Kinkiest Cities in America ~ "a guide to where you can let your inner freak flag fly. Some cities cater to their constituents' wanton needs with festivals, clubs, or plain old randy reputation. Other cities get their sexy on thanks to the Internet .... America's sexual pastimes have long been at odds with our puritanical roots. Despite America's sometimes shameful misgivings around sex, we can't seem to keep it in our pants .... Whatever your preferred desire, the following places can definitely show you a good time."

Each city's listing includes specific reasons why it made the list, and there are a few surprises. One would expect San Francisco, Las Vegas, or New Orleans. But Roselawn, Indiana? Hurley, Wisconsin? Click on the link to satisfy your curiosity, and start planning your next road trip.

In a similar vein, here is The Kinky States of America Map (see image above), which breaks down regions within each state into more and less kinky, based on self-descriptions culled from multitudes of online dating sites, and broken down by gender. Vivid blue means wilder men, hot pink means wilder women. Duller colors, kinda tame. Who'da thought that southern New Mexico and southern West Virginia would be the respective gender hot spots of the nation? 'Course, a lot depends on sample size within each area. It's all in good fun.

Not so much fun is the life of Timema, a genus of western U.S. stick insects which reproduce by parthenogenesis (asexually). Two species in particular have not engaged in sexual reproduction in over one million years. That. Is. Just. Sad.

A couple of videos are making the rounds by email and on social network sites. In one, actor Matt Damon defends teachers against a (expletive) cameraman. Matt, whose mother is a teacher, is one of the more genuine, grounded people in Hollywood, and it was fun to watch his south Boston upbringing show through. You go, MD.

In the second video, the mayor of Vilnius, Lithuania, uses a tank to crush a luxury car parked blocking a bicycle lane (see image below). The article describes the action, and the video is narrated by the mayor. It's a nice touch that after the car owner comes out, discovered he's been caught with his pants down, and reacts with shame and horror, the mayor sweeps up the broken glass and then rides off on his bicycle. Lest you think Lithuanians are madmen, the sequence was a public service stunt, with a car bought especially for the occasion to make a point. Still, how many times have we wished for just such a service for those arrogant S.O.B.s who block bicycle lanes or park illegally in handicapped spaces?

WHY WE BLOG

Bora Zivkovic in Scientific American online has written a thoughtful summary of the reasons why writers compose blogs, and the article is worth exploring. Since the advent of the Internet, blogs have proliferated ~ as of February 2011, there are over 156 million public blogs in existence. Sorting through them to find interesting and informative content is made a bit easier by understanding the writer's motives. Some reasons include ~

~ sharing world, national, or local news.

~ PR and marketing.

~ engendering political action.

~ sharing a personal diary.

~ sharing images (art, photography, photoshopped humor or satire.

~ documenting day-to-day scientific research.

~ providing a classroom tool for both teachers and students.

~ establishing a forum for communication with others.

~ doing outreach, e.g., science writers blogging for lay audiences.

~ provoking discussion of issues of interest.

Zivkovic notes several aspects of blogs which render them unique among media. For instance, "individuals' blogs are imbued with personality. This does not mean they need to reveal anything about their personal lives, nor even who they are, what they do, or where they live. But their personality shines from every sentence .... Personality breeds trust (yes ~ honesty, transparency, generosity with links, willingness to admit errors and other signs of humanness also contribute to trust, and they are also a part of the blogger's personality ~ those things tell you something important about the person). And the personality makes you come back for more, over and over .... You get to know the blogger over time, and with time your trust grows (or is diminished, in which case you abandon reading it and move on.)

"Blogging is writing without a safety net. You are on your own. Your work is all yours, and it rises and falls on its own merits. Nobody is fact-checking you before you publish, and nobody has your back after you publish ~ you are alone to defend your work against critics.

"Blogging is fast. Things get written and immediately posted.

"Critics are free to post comments (and bloggers are free to moderate their comments ~ those are their personal spaces, after all).

"Blog posts are not meant to be a final word on anything .... A blog post is supposed to cover a topic reasonably well .... But good bloggers know that, if they want to get comments and a vigorous discussion, they need to .... purposefully leave openings, leave stuff unfinished, some lines uncolored, there for the commentors to fill in with their own crayons.

"Very few bloggers focus narrowly on a single topic .... Most people have multiple interests, and even multiple areas of expertise. It is natural, if they are active online, that they cover a plethora of topics in their postings on their blogs or on social networks. Which is perfectly fine ~ their readers get an even fuller picture of the person, the personality, which helps them decide if they like or trust that person. It is also natural to comment on stuff one has no expertise on. Out of curiosity. Using a blog as a tool for exploration. Using a blog as a writing laboratory."

I like that last phrase ~ a writing laboratory. It encapsulates one of my personal reasons for having persisted in composing over a thousand entries in this blog, in just over three years. I aspire to write fiction. But no matter the writing genre, a prerequisite is developing the habit, the discipline to write mindfully, every day. Predatorhaven provides one forum for honing my skills, my understanding, my craft.

Like many blog writers, I also enjoy sharing discoveries which excite me ~ in science, in the arts. And I do confess to enjoying tossing out a verbal hand grenade on certain topics (politics, religion), to provoke a spirited discussion. A few of my regular readers respond, but in the form of emails or phone calls or posts on Facebook or Google+. Which is fine, I enjoy hearing from you. I also encourage you to post your responses using the "comments" prompt at the bottom of each post. It would be wonderful to spark spirited conversation threads, both for their own sake and to allow readers to become acquainted with each other.

My guidelines for comments are few and succinct. Write responsibly. Consider what you've written before you hit the "enter" button ~ is it accurate, relevant, and does it contribute to the understanding of the reader? No abusive comments will be tolerated or published. And that's about it. So far I've published every comment ever written, whether the reader agreed with my stance or not. I think that speaks volumes for the quality of my readers, don't you?
